The Oscars, Analysed, Part Four

Oscars2013-620x350Next up on our category breakdown is Best Screenplay from a previously published material.

The Nominees:   Benh Zeitlin  ‘Beasts Of The Southern Wild’;  Tony Kushner  ‘Lincoln’;  David Magee  ‘Life Of Pi’; David O. Russell ‘Silver Linings Playbook’  and  Chris Terrio  ‘Argo’.

A great list of nominees, but one piece of work stands out there. I wouldn’t have minded ‘Skyfall’ or ‘The Sessions’ to get a nomination here, but the five up there are already strong enough. So, quite simply, the Oscars are spot on with this.

Who should win:  Tony Kushner  ‘Lincoln’. Playwright Tony Kushner collaborated with Spielberg before, for ‘Munich’, and they had a job on their hands with adapting Doris Kearns Goodwin’s book ‘Team Of Rivals’. Kushner nails it, producing a story that is full of talking, talking, negotiating, bargaining, talking, more talking, and it’s all riveting. Superb script.

Who will win: I doubt the Oscars will be stupid here, so Tony Kushner ‘Lincoln’. The category is filled with good material but as  I said this stands out. It’s one of the best movies ever written about politics. Kushner will be deserving of his Oscar.
