Iron Man 3

Shane Black directs the third installment of the successful Marvel franchise, starring Robert Downey Jr, Gwyneth Paltrow, Guy Pearce, Ben Kingsley, Don Cheadle and a whole host of other actors.

It’s a shame that the movie itself couldn’t live up to the hype. Despite the PR team trailing the movie on American chat shows and with the blogosphere hyped up with the next and final installment of the trilogy.

The plot doesn’t know where it wants to go, all out in a big Action movie? Or a tragic love story, with Paltrow playing the Femme Fatale? Sadly, it achieves neither, and makes for a mixed viewing experience. But Paltrow and Downey Jr are able to provide a believeable, caring relationship, often witty, but the plot lets their best efforts down.

With the addition of Guy Pearce (who is back to what he does best), Rebecca Hall and Ben Kingsley, who all play their parts well, or as well as they can given the plot.

According to  IMDB: “When Tony Stark’s world is torn apart by a formidable terrorist called the Mandarin, he starts an odyssey of rebuilding and retribution.”

As with the previous movies, Downey Jr has the wit and comedy down, along with the damaged hero, who is forced to protect (rather feebly) Pepper Potts, who’s role is underdeveloped and who’s plotline is confused and ends up being a classic Femme Fatale.

However, the Special Effects for the movie are excellent, perhaps the best thing about it. There’s gadgets galore, a swanky environment, and, excellent transformation scenes.

I expect fans will revel in the final installment, with a combination of action, doubt, and Downey Jr confidently and fearlessly reprising his role, there is at least some hope for this rather mopey movie.

‘Iron Man 3’ is out in cinemas now.
