Toronto International Film Festival – Part VII

Words by Naomi Jeffreys

Director David O Russell (The Fighter) directs an all star cast including the movie star of the moment, Jennifer Lawrence (The Hunger Games) and funny man Bradley Cooper (The Hangover) and Robert De Niro (Stardust).

The film’s synopsis, according to IMDB is: ‘After a stint in a mental institution, former teacher Pat Solitano moves back in with his parents and tries to reconcile with his ex-wife. Things get more challenging when Pat meets Tiffany, a mysterious girl with problems of her own.’

So, the reviews are in from the Toronto Film Festival, Collider.com said; “…But there’s a “healthy” level of crazy, and the search for that level is what makes David O. Russell‘s Silver Linings Playbook sharply comic and surprisingly sweet.”, “…it still has enough of an edge to deliver some great jokes, and strong performances to make the emotions ring true.”. Whereas Indiewire.com said: “But none of this works without some carefully developed, and perfectly pitched performances from the leads, and Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence, who both arguably give career best, awards-worthy performances”

So far, so good, O.Russell is known for his studies on family life, shown in his gutsy, hard edged The Fighter, which became award winning. It seems that he is shaping himself as an Auteur, whilst exploring new genres, such as comedy.
